Tim Tebow ties Michael Jordan’s home run total
Why it matters: The Giants were considered one of the favorites in the NL West heading into the season, but they’d gotten off to a rocky start, with a 6-10 record heading into a three-game series in Colorado after an off day April 20. That off day was devastating. See, that’s when Bumgarner ’ the best lefty starter in the NL not named Clayton Kershaw over the previous six seasons ’ injured his throwing shoulder in the dirt-bike accident, ramping up the panic level for Giants fans to a 9 on the scale of 1-10 (10s aren’t allowed in April).
The Giants lost all three games to the division-leading Rockies and left Denver seven games out of first place; they’re 11.5 games back heading into Wednesday’s action. Bumgarner’s absence hasn’t been the only setback, of course ’ Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford, Mark Melancon, Hunter Pence, Denard Span, Aaron Hill and Connor Gillaspie have all spent time on the DL, too ’ but it’s the symbol for a disastrous season to this point.
Tim Tebow hit his third home run of the year on Sunday with the Mets’ Class-A Columbia Fireflies.
There are always Tebow shirts at the ballpark. Some fans are wearing his Broncos jersey, some his Jets jersey and some the Florida Gators jersey that just happens to be No. 15 but isn’t really a Tebow jersey because he was an amateur playing college football and the school wouldn’t dare cash in on a player’s fame for its own monetary gain, right?
Mostly, though, there are the Fireflies T-shirts with Tebow’s name and number on the back. You’ll see lots of those at the ballpark, on adults and kids. He’s not the only player with a shirsey in the souvenir shop, in case you’re wondering. Cone, who is from Columbia and played college baseball for the Gamecocks, has a shirt, as do Dash Winningham and Michael Paez. Tebow is the only player, though, with his name and number on a Fireflies hat.
