Colts wear shirts supporting Noblesville school shooting victims at practice

School shootings have become an all too common occurrence in our country and Noblesville, Indiana was the site of one last week.

Thanks to middle school teacher and former Southern Illinois defensive lineman Jason Seaman, the shooting ended with a limited number of casualties. Seaman tackled the shooter while the attack was in progress and before anyone could be killed. Seaman and 13-year-old Ella Whistler were injured and the Colts have helped in the effort to raise money for their medical care.

In the statement, the Trust said it had communicated this with her.

Although Beth has declined our invitations to discuss her qualifications for the last two years, we will continue to proactively engage and meet with any of the Bowlen children who express a desire to earn the right to succeed their father, the statement said. We will vigorously defend Pat’s plan in responding to these and any statements that are contrary to Pat’s words and intentions.

Although Clowney played in all 16 games for the first time in his career last season, he had arthroscopic knee surgery after the season. Clowney has been at the Texans’ facility, but he’s focusing on rehabbing his knee, not doing practice drills.

Clowney is heading into the final year of his rookie contract and set to make $12.3 million this season. The Texans have indicated that they’re hoping to get a long-term extension done with him this year, which would suggest that they’re confident he’s going to be able to get healthy and stay healthy. Even if he’s not ready to go just yet.

Johnny Manziel was content with his first time in a game in more than two years.

Manziel was 9-of-12 passing for 80 yards in his CFL debut as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats lost 36-18 to the Toronto Argonauts in an exhibition game Friday night.

I felt like I was able to get in there and handle the situation well, get some completions and get the guys some balls, Manziel said. I really wasn’t nervous going into it, I was just kind of going out and letting the ball rip.

Star, starter or sub: Predicting how top 2018 draft prospects will fare in the NFL

NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks predict how Washington defensive tackle Vita Vea, LSU running back Derrius Guice, Alabama DT Da’Ron Payne, Michigan DT Maurice Hurst, Georgia RB Sony Michel and USC RB Ronald Jones will fare in the NFL.

Bailey Davis had been a cheerleader for the New Orleans Saints football team for three years before she was fired in January. Her former team, the Saintsations, claims the 22-year-old violated their rules about social media usage.

The Dallas Cowboys’ decision to release Dez Bryant last week was expected by many, but it caught one franchise legend by surprise. Emmitt Smith said on Tuesday that he was a little surprised by Bryant’s release, via the Dallas Morning News’ Jon Machota. There was some thought that locker room issues were part of the reason for Bryant’s release. Jason Witten dismissed that talk and says there are no locker room issues. One Cowboys receiver hinted at a potential reason for Bryant’s release, implying that being outspoken was not a good thing.

Peeking over the tips of a full house in a draft class that features four coveted quarterbacks in addition to alleged can’t-miss prospects such as running back Saquon Barkley, guard Quenton Nelson and pass rusher Bradley Chubb, Gettleman is thrilled to keep the football world guessing.

With the second pick, Gettleman quipped, I’m sitting at Ben and Jerry’s and I have a lot of different flavors to look at.

A week before the draft, he’s perched in the proverbial catbird seat with plenty of intrigue but no firm idea of his intentions.

Like it? I love it, Gettleman beamed. You kidding me?

The Giants are this draft’s great mystery. Will they choose Barkley with the intention of breathing life into Manning’s stalled career? Will they opt for Chubb to rebuild a once-dominant defense? Or is Gettleman playing coy at quarterback, waiting to pounce if his man slips past Cleveland?

You can’t close your mind, Gettleman emphasized. You don’t know what’s going to happen. Listen, we’ll know when we know. I’m not making any decisions before that.

Who can quibble with that approach? So much can happen in the next seven days. The quarterback-needy Bills or another club could knock his socks off with an overwhelming trade offer, rendering his war-room plans obsolete.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady reportedly has yet to commit to playing in the 2018 season.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, multiple sources believe Brady will play. However, his status for 2018 isn’t yet certain.

Schefter’s report comes after Brady chose not to attend the opening of New England’s offseason program this week.

One source told Schefter, My money would be on him playing football for the foreseeable future, but what goes on away from the football field, I don’t know. I don’t know.

In an interview on Westwood One before the Super Bowl (h/t Tom Schad of USA Today), Brady was definitive in saying he would play in 2018.

New England will be in a difficult spot if Brady retires, since the only other quarterback on the roster is journeyman veteran Brian Hoyer.

The Patriots own the Nos. 23 and 31 overall picks in the 2018 NFL draft, meaning they may have enough capital to select an heir to Brady’s throne if a quarterback falls or they trade up.

Florida’s Taven Bryan (9.90) drew comparisons to J.J. Watt (10.0 at DT) at the combine, and with their similar athletic profiles, that’s understandable. Bryan isn’t quite the prospect Watt was coming out of Wisconsin, but Bryan’s similar upside is why he’s an option for the Lions in the opening round. Another possibility, Washington’s Vita Vea (9.49), has drawn comparisons to former Detroit anchor Haloti Ngata (8.42).

Another early-round option is Michigan defensive tackle Maurice Hurst (7.57 RAS). He may have fell short of measuring up to other elite, undersized tackles, Aaron Donald and Geno Atkins (9.46), but still posted numbers at his pro day better than similarly-sized Pro Bowlers Jurrell Casey (3.48) and Kawann Short (4.98).

If the Lions wait until Day 2, the team could target a prospect like North Carolina State’s B.J. Hill (8.64 RAS) or Stanford’s Harrison Phillips (8.00).

Joe Borland, one of Chris’ brothers, is a captain in the Army JAG Corps. Joe is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom (2009-2010), Operation Enduring Freedom (2013) and Operation Inherent Resolve (2017-2018). John Borland, another of his brothers, is an Army major and currently serving as an instructor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences & Leadership at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

The family is involved with After the Impact Fund. ATIF’s board of directors consists of former coaches Mike Ditka and Dan Reeves; Brigadier General Rich Gross, U.S. Army (ret.); Art Pue, former Army Special Forces Green Beret; and former player Matt Birk. It facilitates custom treatment plans for military veterans and former NFL players with traumatic injuries. The three Borland brothers will run in a race sponsored by the Pat Tillman Foundation. Tillman was a former NFL player turned Army Ranger who was killed in Afghanistan.

To plug a hole, they might have to deal a prospect such as Ramos for a veteran of middling impact in hopes of the other team picking up most of the cash tab.

If the Giants sell and this season is as bad as last, then moving Bumgarner starts to make a lot more sense. His team-friendly contract is not only light on dollars but also includes a club option for next season. That’s San Francisco’s best option for a system-replenishing transaction.

Richardson will hold some appeal as a speed threat who is still young, and teams can talk themselves into the notion that he didn’t reach his potential in a Seattle offense in which protection issues prevented receivers from getting deep. Look for him to sign something similar to the five-year, $34 million contract Robert Woods got from the Rams last year — and for the signing team to hope it gets anything like the deal L.A. got on Woods. — Graziano

Or maybe Rhys Hoskins is Matt Olson East, and people just don’t know it yet.

In mid-September, the A’s traveled to Philadelphia for a three-game interleague series. At one point, Hoskins reached first base and exchanged salutations with Olson, and the two young sluggers shared some thoughts on their late-season power binges.

It really kind of made me sick to my stomach, Royals manager Ned Yost said.

The 24-year-old Bonifacio made his major league debut last season, hitting .255 with 17 home runs and 40 RBIs in 113 games.

He is an incredible person who just made a mistake, general manager Dayton Moore said in a statement. Jorge will have our full support as he deals with the consequences of this violation.

Kansas City was reshuffling its outfield this spring after Lorenzo Cain left as a free agent, and Bonifacio was competing for playing time in the field and at designated hitter.

The Royals recently signed free-agent outfielder Jon Jay. Paulo Orlando and several others are also trying to earn time.

Bonifacio’s suspension cleared a roster spot for third baseman Mike Moustakas, who re-signed with the Royals this week after becoming a free agent last fall.

Philadelphia answered 1:06 later with its own power-play goal to tie it.

Not only just getting bigger and stronger but just my movement, my body, the way my body moves and all those things. That’s going to be big for me also because of how long I am, the 7-foot-3 Porzingis said. So I think I don’t know how many months I have, [but] I’m going to use it as efficiently as I can to come back as a better player and also work on my mind … and come back sharp.

The injury is a brutal development for a Knicks team that is hoping to build a young core around Porzingis, who was named to the All-Star team for the first time this season.

Simmonds took a cross-ice pass from Jakub Voracek and shot high over Fleury’s right shoulder.

Haula opened the scoring with 13:43 left in the first when his shot from a sharp angle to the right of the net went off Mrazek’s stick and in.

Grioux tied it 1:27 into the second period when his wrist shot from the slot beat Fleury on the glove side. It extended the captain’s point streak to seven games (three goals, five assists) while increasing his season total to 82 points.

Let’s call it organized noise — not to be confused with Organized Noize, though I’m happy to shout out to Outkast and Goodie Mob. Organized noise is still chaotic, but if we can find even some loose patterns to help guide us, it can put us in a good position to thrive. One thing I like to do, and I’ve alluded to it in this space in recent weeks, is to look at team motivation along with the performance level of the sides in order to try and estimate whether a particular game shapes up for good fantasy value.

The message we want to send this week: No matter its record, every team — from No. 1 Nashville to No. 31 Ottawa — is good at something. So in these rankings, we look at what each team (or a specific player) does best statistically.

Our writers tackle some pressing questions for the stretch run. Could the Kings or Stars make a Predators-esque wild-card run to the Cup final? Will the Penguins or Flyers finish higher in the standings? And where will Carter Hutton play next season?

Hayes sparks D-II William Jewell past UMKC 86-74

Keith Hayes poured in 31 points, knocking down 5 of 7 3-pointers, and grabbed seven rebounds to help Division II William Jewell roll to an 86-74 victory over Missouri-Kansas City on Tuesday night.

Patrick Whelan and Byron Harp added 15 points apiece and Easton Koch scored 11 for the Cardinals, who turned 25 fouls against the Kangaroos (6-16) into a 29-for-34 night at the free-throw line.

The secret is out about Bates-Diop, which means he is regularly double-teamed now. That was the case Monday, when the Cornhuskers did a good job of neutralizing him in the first half. Later in the game his teammates figured out how to get him the ball.

They were doubling me pretty much everywhere, he said. Every time I drove someone was coming. Besides slipping screens and just moving around a little bit more with the ball, my teammates found me. It was mostly just layups to the basket.

Fresno State (15-6, 5-3 Mountain West Conference) had a 65-57 lead with 1:38 left in the game, but UNLV’s Jordan Johnson had back-to-back 3-point plays in a 26-second span to cut the Runnin’ Rebels’ deficit to 65-63 with 60 seconds left. Carter delivered for the Bulldogs. The senior center swatted away a layup by Johnson with nine seconds left and blocked a Brandon McCoy layup with four seconds to go. Johnson fouled Carter, who stepped to the free-throw line and hit the first, then shrugged off a UNLV timeout before hitting the second one for a 67-63 lead. Deshon Taylor added two free throws to close out the scoring.

Johnson paced UNLV (14-6, 3-4) with 18 points, while McCoy added 13 points and 13 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season.

Taylor added 14 points and five rebounds for Fresno State.

Bridges, No. 6 Michigan State hold off Illinois 87-74

Illinois, playing tight zone defense, was able to stick around in the first half despite Michigan State’s height advantage.

Nebraska (14-8, 5-4 Big Ten), fresh off a 20-point win over then-No. 23 Michigan on Thursday, tied it at 46 with 7:56 left with a 3-pointer from James Palmer Jr., who finished with a career-high 34 points.

The lead changed six times in the next four minutes. A pair of foul shots by Palmer cut Ohio State’s lead to four with 2:19 remaining, but the Cornhuskers couldn’t pull any closer.

Nebraska: The surprising Cornhuskers knocked off a ranked team last week and are a better squad than last season with Palmer carrying the load. But they couldn’t outlast the gritty Buckeyes, who are on a roll.

I thought we did a lot of good things defensively, Nebraska coach Tim Miles said. I was disappointed with our offense in the second half. A game like this you’re only going to get so many chances.

They passed this test with flying colors.

Justin Robinson scored 19 points, Ahmed Hill had 18 and the Hokies pulled away in the second half to beat the Tar Heels 80-69 on Monday night.

Blackshear added 16 points for Virginia Tech (14-6, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference), which used a 13-3 run after the Tar Heels closed to within three to open a 64-51 advantage with just under eight minutes remaining. UNC never got closer than eight again.

Joel Berry and Luke Maye scored 23 points each for the Tar Heels (16-5, 5-3). North Carolina turned the ball over 13 times to Virginia Tech’s nine, and Virginia Tech outscored them 11-2 off those mistakes.

We have some issues and that’s my responsibility, coach Roy Williams said. I used to say I shouldn’t have to coach effort and intensity but I’m trying to coach that and not doing a very good job at it. It’s frustrating.

Williams, Carter lead Fresno State past UNLV 69-63

Bryson Williams tossed in 20 points on 10-of-14 shooting and Terrell Carter II added 18 points, six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots in the final seconds to help Fresno State hold off UNLV 69-63 on Tuesday night.

When he did bring out the piece of paper, that was very, very unusual. The last time I saw it done was about four or five years ago, also in an NFL game, and that’s not the norm. Gene made the decision strictly on visual affirmation that the ball made the line to gain, Riveron said at the time. I will advise them not to use it again. I’ve already done that.

Broderick Robinson topped UMKC with 14 points and seven boards, while Brandon McKissic scored 11. Aleer Leek, Xavier Bishop and Jordan Giles added 10 points each for the Kangaroos, who have dropped five of six.

William Jewell trailed 12-10 midway through the first half before Hayes hit back-to-back 3s, Whelan followed with two of his own, Hayes hit two more 3s and Harp added a trey and a jumper in a 23-0 run that left the Cardinals with a 33-12 lead. UMKC pulled within six by halftime and got within two on a couple of occasions early in the second half.

Jae’Sean Tate put the Buckeyes (18-4, 9-0 Big Ten) up by six with a layup with 1:02 left, and a pair of foul shots by Kaleb Wesson stretched it to eight. Palmer hit a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left, but Nebraska ran out of time.

I think mentally we just stayed together, said Tate, who had 17 points. There were times you could see we struggled. In the first half, we were getting a little frustrated, but I think we did a great job in the second half, especially later on, coming together and staying together.

Patriots’ top 5 plays on way to Super Bowl 52

The Patriots in 2017 ranked second in the NFL in points scored and first in yards. In two playoff games on their way to Super Bowl 52, they scored 59 points and generated 782 yards of offense.

So, yeah, New England players have made their share of memorable plays this season.

Kidd said he told him, There’s nothing you can do. All you can do is tell the truth. That’s it.

Kidd said he thanked Antetokounmpo for his loyalty and that he was thankful to be able to coach him and help him become the player he is today. And I know when our paths cross again, he’ll be much better.

Kidd said he was officially informed he’d been fired about 15 minutes later when he met with general manager Jon Horst and team president Peter Feigin at a pizza restaurant.

Jason Kidd’s tenure in Milwaukee was undone by weak defense. Kevin Pelton examines whether a coaching change will get the young Bucks roster to the next level.

Last February, when Costas announced he was stepping down as primetime host of NBC’s Olympic coverage, a role to be filled by Mike Tirico at the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, he said he expected this year’s Super Bowl to be his football broadcasting swan song. Costas has hosted six Super Bowls throughout his career.

Not this year, though, as NBC plans to keep its Football Night in America team intact. Sunday night host Dan Patrick and Thursday night host Liam McHugh will handle hosting duties in Minneapolis, while Tony Dungy, Rodney Harrison, Mike Florio and Chris Simms will also have prominent pre-game roles. Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth, of course, will call the game between the Eagles and Patriots.

The cracks in the foundation are there. The day-to-day issues, as serious as they may be, they may come and go. But you cannot change the nature of the game. I certainly would not let, if I had an athletically gifted 12- or 13-year-old son, I would not let him play football.

NFL players vote Antonio Brown Sporting News Offensive Player of the Year for 2017

Antonio Brown is the best thing the NFL has seen at wide receiver since the prime of Jerry Rice. Now he’s the first wide receiver since Rice to be named Sporting News’ Offensive Player of the Year in 27 years.

Brown getting the 2017 version of the SN award ends a run of quarterbacks dominating, as they won nine of the previous 10. Brown’s season, although it fell a couple games short of his Steelers getting to Super Bowl 52, was that worthy.

Brown has made five consecutive Pro Bowls and was named first-team All-Pro for the fourth straight time. In February of 2017, he signed a five-year, $72.2 million extension with the Steelers that locks him in through ’21. Brown will turn 30 before the 2018 season. Rice played until age 42.

Brown is fifth among active players in both career receptions (733) and career receiving yards (9,910). He’s No. 3 all-time in receiving yards per game (86.2).

Although Brown is still looking for his first Super Bowl ring and is highly unlikely to catch Rice in the record books, there’s no doubt in this passing era, he’s the same type of wideout who can take over a game no matter the matchup because of his great hands, quickness and precise route-running.

Brown, like Rice, also fell a little short of winning with their happy feet on Dancing With The Stars. But he deserved to be the first receiver to follow in Rice’s footsteps with the highest respect from his peers.

Watt was instrumental in relief efforts after Hurricane Harvey hit Houston and helped raise more than $37 million. Dalton’s charity helps fund local children’s hospitals, and it received massive support from Bills fans after Dalton helped Buffalo end its playoff drought this season.
